Consumers are more knowledgeable than marketers about how the web works, and they are more comfortable using it. This knowledge has advanced in leaps and bounds with the growing influence of social media. What is social media? According to Wikipedia, "Social media is online content created by people using highly accessible and scalable publishing technologies. At its most basic sense, social media is a shift in how people discover, read and share news, information and content. It's a fusion of sociology and technology, transforming monologues (one to many) into dialogues (many to many) and is the democratization of information, transforming people from content readers into publishers."
Social media is the fastest growing sector of internet use in many countries. Social media users tend to spend more time on the web overall, whether via PC or mobile, and there is a growing divide between web users who use social media and those who don't. While social provides many opportunities for marketers, it's also a challenging environment for brands that don't know how to approach consumers within this context which turns "traditional" advertising on its head!
Some of the topics covered in the Social Media module include:

- Social networks
